Literary Elements

Imagery: "He was a beautifully crafted man, a few years short of thirty. His face was handsome, with full lips that turned up slightly at the edges, giving his mouth a faintly cruel expression." (Page 367)

Irony: "The Bird was violently ill, completely incapacitated... crying like a child." (Page 461) The irony occurs when the Bird is being compared to a child. This is ironic because the Bird was always so cruel, relentless, and evil-so different from how a child would act. In this excerpt, the Bird is severely ill from some dysentery-infected saline solution mixed into his rice by some POW members looking for revenge.

Figurative Language: "Looking extremely pregnant, Louie boarded the plane." (Page 512) After Louie was rescued from the POW camp, he stuffed his shirt full of K rations because was worried he would never get a chance to eat again. Louie obviously wasn't pregnant but the boxes of rations underneath his shirt gave him a robust belly.
